The Ubud Pulina Coffee Plantation

Today I visited Pulina Coffee Plantation in Ubud, which overlooks the picturesque Tegalalang Rice Terrace.

The guide started the tour by showing us the Luwak, a very adorable, Indonesian cat-like animal. I thought the plantation doubled as a sanctuary for the Luwak, so was very shocked to find out that it actually helps in producing the plantations coffee. The plantation workers collect the digested (pooped out) coffee beans of the Luwak, dry them in the sun, rinse with hot water, peel to obtain the coffee beans, roast, and finally grind the roasted coffee beans.

It finally came time to sample the coffee, so we sat at a table that overlooked the rice terrace. I’m not much of a coffee drinker, so it made the experience even more interesting that I would be drinking “pre-loved” coffee beans. Surprisingly, the Luwak coffee was absolutely delicious. Who would have thought that poo would taste so lovely?

I also enjoyed a tray of Balinese flavoured coffees and teas. (From right to left: Bali Coffee, Vanilla Coffee, True Hot Cocoa, Chocolate Coffee, Ginseng Coffee, Ginger Coffee, Ginger Tea, and Lemon Tea). My favourite was the Ginger Coffee, it had a nice spicy kick to it.

The Pulina Coffee Plantation offered stunning views of the rice terraces and the best coffee I have ever had. It is definitely worth a visit while exploring Ubud.

Yours Truly,

Rebecca.
